Piano Step is about impulse and control. I wrote it during a time when my composing felt split between two approaches: the idealistic and formal, and the free and improvisatory.
Throughout its nine minutes, a rigid series of eleven chords repeats, transforms, disintegrates, and recombines. In spite of this is everything else: reactions and interruptions, non sequiturs, some Schubert...
Piano Step was commissioned by Lisa Moore who gave the premiere on April 21, 2010 at (le) Poisson Rouge in New York City as part of the MATA Festival of Young Composers.
