Zofo Piano Duet: "ZOFOMOMA"

Eva-Maria Zimmermann & Keisuke Nakagoshi

UC Davis Department of Music

The ZOFO-MOMA Live Concert Experience unfolds as an aurally and visually stunning walking tour through a virtual museum of modern art. Against an ever-changing backdrop of contemporary paintings, 15 new ZOFO-commissioned duet compositions are revealed throughout the 72-minute continuous performance.

Also, in a nod to Mussorgsky, this 21st-century Pictures at an Exhibition leads viewers from one gallery to the next accompanied by a new “Promenade” Theme arranged by ZOFO’s Keisuke Nakagoshi. For this cutting-edge project, ZOFO solicited new works from top composers around the globe—including UC Davis’s own professor of music Pablo Ortiz—and requested each to select a painting representative of his or her culture as a springboard to the creative process. The result is a rich tapestry of sights and sounds reflecting the cultural, musical, and artistic diversity of our world community.

Since joining forces as a professional duo in 2009, internationally acclaimed solo pianists Eva-Maria Zimmermann and Keisuke Nakagoshi (ZOFO) have electrified audiences from Carnegie Hall to Tokyo, Japan, with their dazzling artistry and outside-the-box thematic programming for piano-four-hands. This GRAMMY-nominated, prize-winning Steinway Artist Ensemble—one of only a handful of duos worldwide devoted exclusively to piano duets—is blazing a bold new path for four-hands groups by focusing on 20th- and 21st-century repertoire and by commissioning new works from noted composers each year.

Cal Performances presents Spektral Quartet

The Spektral Quartet is on a roll. One of the most daring chamber groups on American stages, in the past year alone, the ensemble recorded two Philip Glass quartets, played Schoenberg's full quartet cycle, made its debut at the Library of Congress, and received a Grammy nomination for its CD with jazz luminary Miguel Zenón. In Berkeley, Spektral plays the world premiere of a new electroacoustic work by Samuel Adams, Schubert's haunting Rosamunde Quartet, and Philip Glass' Company Quartet, originally composed for a theatrical production of Samuel Beckett's 1979 novella of the same name. "They have everything: a supreme technical command that seems to come easily, a capacity to make complicated music clear, and…an ability to cast a magic spell" (The New York Times).

Program

Philip Glass - String Quartet no. 2, Company
Franz Schubert - String Quartet no. 13 in A minor, D. 804, Rosamunde
Samuel Adams - String Quartet no. 2, Current

Spektral Quartet at Town Hall Seattle

The Grammy-nominated Spektral Quartet pursues vivid conversation between exhilarating works of musical canon alongside works written this decade, this year, or this week. They bring this convergence to Town Music with a combination of “String Quartet No. 2, Current”—an electro-acoustic work by modern composer Samuel Adams—alongside Schubert’s “Rosamunde” Quartet.

“Current” and “Rosamunde” serve as ideal companions, each giving the listener the sense of an internal journey through an outward and pervasive forward motion. “Rosamunde” is filled with the passion and drama of the composer’s other works while simultaneously possessed of nostalgia and melancholy, constantly shifting between major and minor to play with the listener’s expectations. “Current” achieves a sonic landscape just as poignant and arresting as Schubert’s. Scored for quartet and electronic track played through four resonating snare drums, the crux of the piece is the relationship between the minimal digital language of the resonating drums and the warm, acoustic complexity of the string quartet. Listen in as this virtuosic quartet presents two transportive performances that weave together sensibilities from pieces of classical and modern chamber music.

Franz Schubert - Rosamunde Quartet
Samuel Adams - String Quartet no. 2, Current

Spektral Quartet at Greenlake Festival

Spektral Quartet at Greenlake Festival

The twice Grammy-nominated Spektral Quartet is back this summer with an iridescent mashup of the traditional and the new. Written during the most turbulent period of Franz Schubert’s short life, the String Quartet No. 13, “Rosamunde” stands as one of the composer’s most beloved quartets, voyaging between heartbreak and ecstacy with equal charisma. Former Chicago Symphony Orchestra composer-in-residence Samuel Adams points to Schubert as a primary inspiration for his String Quartet No. 2, “Current,” a piece as mesmerizing for its string writing as its inclusion of percussion and electronics. Like two sides of the same coin, Schubert and Adams compel listeners to consider life’s most profound quandaries and questions – through some of the most pleasurable music written for the string quartet.

Program

String Quartet No. 13 in A minor (Franz Schubert)
String Quartet No. 2 “Current” (Samuel Adams)
